Tiuj arboj,kiujn ni nomis tremoloj kaj kverkoj kaj aceroj,ĉirkaŭis grandan placon kaj formis ekranon,tra kiu ni povis vidi la eksteran mondon,la riveron,la montojn kaj la ŝoseon.Iom malantaŭe sur la placo staris proksimume dudek dometoj,konstruitaj el ligno kaj ŝtonoj.Ili estis tiel malnovaj kiel la montoj,kiel la ĉielo,kiel la ĉiamridetantaj blankaj nuboj;tiel malnovaj,ke neniu povis diveni ilian aĝon.La lignaj pordoj kaj ŝtonaj muroj aspekte neniel inter si diferencis,ĉar ĉiuj senkoloriĝis pro la varmo kaj la malvarmo,la vento kaj la frosto.Al ili kontrastis sole la tegolaj tegmentoj,kiuj estis peĉe nigraj.Kuntuŝante ili aspektis kiel ondarserio pendanta de la ĉielo.La avo plej maljuna en la vilaĝo kutimis diri,ke ĉiam ili aspektis tiel,kaj ke ili ĉiam ankoraŭ aspektos tiel,negrave kiu dinastio alvenis kaj kiu Imperiestro foriris.

这些树木，有的是山杨，有的是栎树，有的是枫树、槭木，它们圈了好大一片空地。它们事实上是起着一种屏风的作用。透过这道屏风，人们可以瞧见外面的世界、山河和大路。在这块空地的后边立着二十来间用木料和石头建成的村屋。它们也是同样地古老，象外面的那些山丘，象上空的蓝天，象那永远微笑的白云--它们是那么古老，谁也不知道它们究竟存在了多少岁月。那些木门和石墙，在外表上都看不出有什么太大的差异；无数的寒暑和风霜已经使它们全都变得苍白了。唯一可以和它们成为鲜明对照的，是屋顶上的那些楞瓦--它们全都是黑色。这些瓦顶，连成一片，看上去就象悬空的一层层波浪。村里的老爷爷都说，它们一直是那个样儿。不管哪个朝代来，哪个皇帝去，它们永远是那个样儿。

These trees,which we called aspens and oaks and maples,enclosed a large space and served as a screen,through which we could see the outside world,the river,the mountains and the highway.Towards the back of the space stood twenty cottages or so,built of wood and stone.They were as old as the mountains,as the sky,as the ever-smiling white clouds,as old that no one could tell their age.Between the wooden doors and stone walls there was no difference in appearance,all being bleached white by heat and cold,wind and frost.The only contrast to them was in the tiled roofs,which were pitch black.Joining together,they looked like a series of waves suspended in the sky.The oldest grandfather in the village used to say that they had always looked like that and that they would still look like that,no matter what dynasty came and what Emperor went.
