How to Learn to Speak and Write Esperanto

Esperanto is spoken worldwide; with a little practice, you can become fluent in the language in a few months.(kind of) Esperanto is more commonly spoken in Europe, Brazil, and East Asia, and there are up to 2000 native speakers and up to 2 000 000 speakers in total. Esperanto was created in the 1870s and 1880s by Dr. L. L. Zamenhof, who published the first Esperanto grammar in Warsaw in 1887.

    Consider buying language software that teaches Esperanto. Such software does exist. One program is called 101 Languages of the World and features Esperanto.

    Check the websites below (in 'External Links') for free lessons on Esperanto.

    Download the Plena Manlibro de Esperanta Gramatiko

    Find a local Esperanto club and go there. You will see that most Esperanto speakers are very friendly people and open to anyone who tries to learn Esperanto.

    Learn some key phrases:
    • Hello: Saluton
    • What is your name?: Kio estas via nomo?
    • My name is ... : Mia nomo estas ...
    • How much?: Kiom?
    • Do you speak Esperanto?: Ĉu vi parolas Esperanton?
    • I don't understand: Mi ne komprenas
    • Thank you: Dankon
    • You're welcome: Ne dankinde
    • Please: Bonvolu
    • It is a nice day: Estas bela tago
    • I love you: Mi amas vin
    • Goodbye: Ĝis la revido/ Ĝis/Adiaŭ!
